TOEFL iBT Speaking: Take an Interview
Take an Interview is the second TOEFL iBT Speaking task. A prerecorded interviewer asks four connected questions on one topic. There is no preparation time, and you have 45 seconds to answer each question. Early questions ask about your own experience; later ones ask for your opinion on a broader issue, with reasons and support.
- Questions
- 4, on one connected topic
- Response time
- 45 seconds per question
- Preparation
- None
- Interviewer
- Prerecorded, not a live examiner
- Progression
- Personal or factual first, then opinion with support
How it works
- 1The recorded interviewer introduces the topic and asks the first question.
- 2Recording starts right away and runs for 45 seconds.
- 3The interviewer asks the next question, building on the same topic.
- 4After the fourth answer, the Speaking section ends.

Topic: how students study. Q1: "Where do you usually study, and why do you like that place?" Q4: "Some people think universities should keep libraries open 24 hours a day. Do you agree? Why or why not?"
Show a strong responseHide response
Outline: Q4 outline (about 45 seconds): clear view (partly agree) → reason 1: students with jobs or night classes need late access → brief example from your own schedule → limit: keep one floor open overnight to control costs → one-line wrap-up.
The later questions reward a direct answer, one or two reasons and a concrete example. Personal experience from your earlier answers can support your opinion here, since all four questions share a topic.
Tips that work
- Answer the question in your first sentence. With no prep time, a direct start buys you thinking time for the details.
- Use a simple frame for opinion questions: position, reason, example, short conclusion. It fits comfortably in 45 seconds.
- Reuse material from earlier answers. The questions are connected, so a detail from question 1 can support your view in question 4.
- If you finish early, add a second example or a brief contrast rather than stopping with 15 seconds left.
Common mistakes
- Giving a one-sentence answer and leaving most of the 45 seconds silent.
- Memorizing a speech that does not answer the question asked.
Questions candidates ask
Is the TOEFL interview with a real person?
No. The interviewer is prerecorded, and your answers are recorded for scoring. It is not a live conversation.
Do I get preparation time?
No. Each 45-second recording starts right after the question, so practice beginning your answer immediately.
Are the four questions related?
Yes. They follow one topic, moving from your own experience toward a broader opinion question.
How can I rehearse this format?
EnglishHub's exam-style interview practice uses four timed 45-second answers and returns AI feedback, which is an independent estimate rather than an ETS score.
