IELTS General Listening Part 1: Everyday Conversation

IELTS General Training Listening Part 1 is a conversation between two people in an everyday social situation, such as booking a service or registering for a class. You hear it once and answer 10 questions, usually by filling in a form or notes with names, numbers, dates and short details.

How it works

  1. 1You get a short time to read the Part 1 questions before the audio starts.
  2. 2The conversation plays once; answer while you listen, in the order the questions appear.
  3. 3Type each answer into its blank, keeping to the word limit in the instructions.
  4. 4The test moves on to Part 2 without a pause to replay anything.

Form completion. Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer. Audio excerpt (caller registering for a weekend English conversation club): "The club meets on Saturdays in the community hall, room fourteen. The fee is twelve dollars a term, and please bring a copy of your residence card when you come the first time." NEW MEMBER FORM Document to bring: a copy of your residence ______

Show a strong response

Outline: card

The speaker says 'bring a copy of your residence card', so one word, card, completes the form. The room number (fourteen) and fee (twelve) are nearby distractors that answer other lines of the form.

Tips that work

  • Before the audio starts, label each blank with the kind of answer it needs: a number, a date, a street name or a noun.
  • Expect speakers to correct themselves ('Tuesday, no, sorry, Thursday'); the final version is the one to write.
  • When a name or street is spelled out letter by letter, write the letters exactly as you hear them.
  • Check the word limit on every question group; writing three words where two are allowed makes the answer wrong.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the first number you hear instead of waiting for the confirmed one.
  • Misspelling common words such as accommodation or February; spelling is marked.
  • Losing your place after one missed answer instead of moving to the next blank.

Questions candidates ask

Is Listening Part 1 different for IELTS General Training?

No. General Training and Academic candidates take the same Listening test, so Part 1 is identical in format. Your practice here also prepares you for the Academic Listening test.

Do capital letters matter in my answers?

Spelling matters in IELTS Listening, and the rules on capitals can differ by test format. Write names and places the way they are spelled in the audio, and check the official IELTS site for the current guidance on capitalisation.

What if I miss an answer while the audio keeps going?

Leave it and move to the next blank straight away. The recording plays only once, and questions follow the order of the audio, so chasing a missed answer usually costs you the next two as well.
