Get your questions answered

Preparing for an English exam throws up the same questions again and again. Here are straight answers to the ones we're asked most — and the places you can ask us anything else.

Questions candidates ask most

Exam formats and acceptance rules change. For anything that affects a booking or an application, confirm it with the test provider or the immigration authority before you act on it.

How long does it take to prepare for IELTS Academic?

It depends far more on your starting level than on the exam. Moving up one band typically takes months of regular work, not weeks, because the band descriptors describe a level of English rather than a set of tricks. A useful way to plan is to sit a full timed mock first, treat that score as your real starting point, and work backwards from your test date — most candidates need the largest share of that time on Writing and Speaking, which are the two skills you cannot improve by reading about them.

PTE Academic or PTE Core — which one should I take for Canada?

They are different tests for different purposes: PTE Academic is the academic-stream test, and PTE Core is the general-training equivalent. Which one is accepted depends entirely on the programme you are applying to, and that list changes — check the requirements on the IRCC page for your specific programme before booking, rather than on any third-party summary. Both are computer-delivered, scored 10–90 on the Global Scale of English, and share most of their task types, so preparation transfers between them.

Why do I keep losing marks in CELPIP Listening?

The most common cause is answering from memory of the topic rather than from what was actually said. CELPIP Listening plays each recording once, and the questions are frequently built on a rephrasing — the answer option repeats a word you heard, while the correct one paraphrases a sentence you half-heard. The habit worth building is to read the question stem before the audio starts and to note the speaker's reasoning rather than the nouns, because the distractors are usually made from the nouns.

What does an OET clinical letter actually need?

It is marked as professional communication, not as an essay. The five criteria cover purpose, content, conciseness and clarity, genre and style, and organisation and layout — so a letter that contains every fact from the case notes but does not make its purpose clear in the first line scores badly. Select only what the reader needs to act on, state the reason for writing immediately, and keep the register that of one clinician writing to another. OET is profession-specific: the case notes and the expected register differ between nursing, medicine and the other professions.

How is TOEFL iBT Speaking scored?

Each of the four Speaking tasks is rated on delivery, language use and topic development, and the section is reported on a 0–30 scale that contributes to the 0–120 total. Two things cost candidates more marks than grammar: running out of things to say before the time is up, and a response that is fluent but never answers the question that was asked. Preparing a repeatable shape for each task type — and practising against the clock, out loud — is worth more than vocabulary drilling.

Is an AI-marked practice score the same as a real score?

No. A practice score is an estimate produced by a model applying the published criteria, not a result from the test provider, and it can differ from what a human examiner would award. Its value is directional: it shows which criterion is holding you back and whether that is improving week to week. Use it to decide what to work on, and never as a prediction of the result you will be issued.

Does EnglishHub have a forum or study groups?

Not today. Rather than run a thin discussion board, we put the help where the practice is: Hub Tutor answers questions about your exam at any hour, and support answers anything about your account. If a learner community opens later, it will be announced on the blog — this page will not claim one exists before it does.

Can I share my result or recommend EnglishHub to someone?

Yes — the referral programme gives both of you a reward when a friend you invite subscribes, and we would genuinely like to hear how your test went. We do not publish anyone's words as a testimonial without asking them first, which is why there are none on this page.

There's no discussion board here yet, and we'd rather say so than run an empty one. Hub Tutor answers exam questions at any hour, and a person answers everything else — account, billing, or anything on the site that looks wrong.
