How CELPIP Listening works
Listening opens the CELPIP-General test. After an unscored practice task, you work through six parts: Problem Solving, a Daily Life Conversation, Listening for Information, a News Item, a Discussion (shown as a video), and Viewpoints. The recordings get longer and more complex as you go, moving from everyday conversations to a report weighing several opinions.
Every recording plays once and you cannot pause or replay it. The questions appear after the audio, so you listen without knowing exactly what will be asked. Most questions give you four answer choices. The test uses Canadian English throughout.
Your 38 answers produce a Listening score on the CELPIP level scale from 1 to 12, which lines up with Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. Listening is reported as its own score, separate from Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Tips that work
- Train with single-play audio only. Replaying during practice builds a habit the test will not allow.
- Listen for decisions, changes of mind and contrasts ("but", "actually"). Those moments carry most answers.
- Match meaning, not words: wrong options often repeat words you heard in a different sense.
- Reset after each part. A difficult recording does not affect the next one unless you let it.
Questions candidates ask
How many questions are in the CELPIP Listening test?
38 scored questions across six parts: 8 in Part 1, 5 in Part 2, 6 in Part 3, 5 in Part 4, 8 in Part 5 and 6 in Part 6. There is also a short practice task at the start that is not scored.
Can I replay recordings in CELPIP Listening?
No. Every recording in the Listening test plays only once and cannot be paused. That is the biggest difference from casual listening practice, and it is why realistic single-play practice matters.
How is CELPIP Listening scored?
Your answers are converted to a CELPIP level from 1 to 12 for Listening. The levels correspond to CLB levels, which is how immigration and professional bodies usually state their requirements.
How can I practise each part?
EnglishHub has exam-style practice for all six Listening parts, with single-play audio, as part of 200 practice sets for CELPIP, plus 50 full mock tests. The first mock is free.
